In 1992 José Mourinho was initially hired by Sporting Clube de Portugal to act as interpreter to new manager Sir Bobby Robson. His role soon expanded into coaching and the pair moved to FC Porto in 1993. With Robson as coach and Mourinho as his assistant Porto went on to dominate Portuguese football in the following years - winning the 1993–94 Taça de Portugal, the 1994–95 and 1995–96 Portuguese championship, the 1994, 1995 and 1996 Portuguese Super Cup. Their fruitful partnership continued when they moved to Barcelona in 1996, pictured, winning the 1997 European Cup Winners’ Cup
When Robson moved clubs the following season, Mourinho did not follow as Barcelona were keen to retain him as assistant manager where he began working with Robson’s successor, Louis van Gaal, who saw that his number two had the promise to be more than a skilled assistant. He let Mourinho develop his own independent coaching style and entrusted him with the coaching duties of FC Barcelona B. Van Gaal also let Mourinho take charge of the first team for certain trophies, like the Copa Catalunya, which Mourinho won in 2000
His tactical acumen and man-management skills helped his transition to becoming a manager in his own right. And after spells with Benfica and União de Leiria, he led Porto to victory in the Uefa Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004 (pictured) as well as collecting back-to-back league titles
Mourinho’s relationship with the club owner Roman Abramovich was strained by the signing of Andriy Shevchenko, who arrived as one of the finest strikers in the world but struggled at the club. Abramovich had insisted on purchasing the Ukrainian
Liverpool again dumped Chelsea out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage in 2007, and though they won both domestic cups, they lost their league title
But the Champions League remained elusive and after a disappointing campaign in 2012-13, Mourinho’s fate was sealed. He left the club by mutual agreement, before signing a deal to return to Chelsea
Chelsea finished third in Mourinho’s first season back in charge, two points behind Liverpool. Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Anfield in April contributed to title-chasing Liverpool failure to land their first since 1989-90
Just over five weeks later Mourinho got his hands on some more silverware when goals from John Terry and Diego Costa seal a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Capital One Cup final
However more silverware did find it’s way to Stamford Bridge in May when a 1–0 home victory over Crystal Palace helped Chelsea to the title with three games to spare. It was their first league title since 2010, Mourinho’s third and Chelsea’s fourth Premier League title
Things didn’t improve much in the next game when goals from Sergio Agüero, Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho gave Manchester City a 3-0 win at the Emirates
The defeats kept coming, a total of nine in the opening 14 Premier League games, giving Chelsea their worst start to a season since 1978. Following the most recent defeat at Leicester, Mourinho rounded on his players saying they had betrayed him and that they can no longer view themselves as superstars
After days of constant speculation, José Mourinho’s second stint at Chelsea finally came to an end when he was sacked by the club on 17 December. Two days later ,at Chelsea’s next home game, the Chelsea faithful showed their appreciation of the Special One
